Buying acrylic sheet for a laser, supplier by supplier
Buying sheet for a laser is a different shopping trip from buying sheet for a window, and the suppliers split along that line. How to read a supplier page before you buy
- Find out whether the price is a price. A figure with the thing it buys named beside it can be compared with another supplier's. A from-price cannot, because it is whatever the smallest piece the configurator will sell happens to cost, and almost none of these pages say what that piece is. Of the sixteen suppliers read, three print the first kind, four print the second, and the rest print nothing until dimensions go in, or say to ask.
- Check the stock size against the bed. A sheet that has to be cut down before it fits is a different purchase from one that drops straight in. MakerStock prints its stock ladder from 8 by 12 to 24 by 48 inches and names the 12 by 20 size as the one that suits a common bed, which is a laser buyer's shape rather than a glazier's; 3D Universe publishes against a named 5 by 10 and 12 by 20.4 inch sheet. A 24 by 48 sheet at a lower price per square inch is not cheaper if the shop has no way to break it down.
- Check cast or extruded before the price. The engraved line is the reason this buyer is on the page, and cast and extruded do different things to it. Several suppliers here publish a price without naming which one the sheet is, and a couple name it in the product title and nowhere else. Where a page does not say, this site records that it does not, rather than assuming the common case.
- Know which silence you are looking at. No price on a page is not one fact. A cut-to-size configurator will give a figure the moment you type a size in; a manufacturer like Rowmark answers Find A Distributor because it does not sell to a one-person shop at all; BestSub's own navigation says Request Catalog and Price; and a page that did not answer when it was read claims nothing either way. This site keeps those apart, because only one of them means come back with dimensions.
